Concrete cooling  [ Return towards  Our offer  ]

Air Liquide's innovative solution to use liquid nitrogen to cool the final concrete mix

The engineering design and specialty concrete mixes used to address more sophisticated projects have advanced significantly in the last 10 years.

One of the most critical design specifications for these projects can be the initial placement temperature of the concrete as well as the core temperature of the structure during the curing process.

If the initial-placement-temperature or core-curing-temperature exceeds the maximum design specifications, the structure could eventually experience premature cracking.

CryoCrete technology

An innovative solution for solving this problem is to use liquid nitrogen to cool the final concrete mix using Air Liquide’s CryoCrete™ Injector System.

Liquid nitrogen from a storage tank is safely injected into the mix truck using automated CryoCrete™ injection lance.

This method :

  • allows greater temperature reductions compared to conventional methods,
  • cools the concrete very quickly, in a matter of minutes,
  • provides flexible and accurate temperature control,
  • requires very little power,
  • eliminates safety concerns associated with ice handling,
  • requires no additional man-power since the CryoCrete™ injection lance can be operated by the batch plant operator &
  • can be less expensive than ice.

Most importantly, the CryoCrete™ does not adversely impact :

  • slump,
  • air content,
  • set time,
  • concrete density &
  • concrete additives.

Ready Mix concrete suppliers have used Air Liquide’s CryoCrete™ injection lance for many critical projects including :

  • bridges,
  • overpass road construction,
  • dams,
  • power plants,
  • sports stadium construction.
